Smith joined for Killers and defined the Somewhere in Time era's bright, chorused chime by running a single-humbucker Charvel/Jackson San Dimas through Gallien-Krueger solid-state combos -- the one period Maiden set their Marshalls aside. His hook-driven compositions ('Wasted Years,' '2 Minutes to Midnight') pair singing leads with a cleaner, more precise tone than the band's cranked-Plexi norm.
