Dream Theater's founding guitarist and the player who made progressive metal a technical discipline rather than a stylistic one. On 1992's Images and Words he was using the first Ibanez JPM prototype -- a DiMarzio Tone Zone at the bridge, a Humbucker From Hell at the neck, and a proprietary four-pole switch that puts the two inner coils together for a chiming clean position -- through Mesa/Boogie rack preamps, with a Roland JC-120 handling the clean tracks. 'Pull Me Under' remains the band's only Top 10 hit. He has played Ernie Ball Music Man signature instruments since 1999.
