I have spent a lot of words on this site telling people that relic'ing is paint. It's paint. A guitar that looks like it survived a decade of bar gigs does not sound like it survived a decade of bar gigs, and every dollar you spend on fake belt buckle rash is a dollar not spent on a fret level.
So here's Harley Benton doing hand-aged relics for €249, which is about $238, and I'm going to have to be honest with myself in public.
What They Actually Did
The Aged Series takes Thomann's existing vintage-style lineup and runs it through an aging process. Out now, roughly 20 configurations:
- Shapes: TE-62 (T-style), ST-62 (S-style), JA-60 (offset), plus JB-62 and PB-62 on the bass side
- Two wear levels: Light Aged and Heavy Aged — lightly played-in versus decades-of-Tuesdays
- Body: US alder
- Neck: caramelised (roasted) maple, with a choice of caramelised maple or laurel fingerboards
- Pickups: Harley Benton ISOLA alnico V, vintage-voiced, standard across the range
- Finish: nitrocellulose — actual nitro, not poly with a scratch pattern
- Hardware: aged across the board, not just the paint
- Colors: Olympic White, Olympic Black, 3-Tone Sunburst, Seafoam Green, Shell Pink, Lake Placid Blue over Sunburst, Heavy Aged Candy Apple over Sunburst
- Price: from €249 / ~£214 / ~$238
Harley Benton's own line on it was that this "might just be our most ambitious series yet," which is the kind of thing every brand says. The spec that makes it not-nonsense is the nitro plus the roasted neck. Nitro at this price is genuinely unusual — it's slower to spray, it gasses off, it's a manufacturing headache, and it's the reason the aging can look like wear instead of like sandpaper. And a caramelised maple neck is the same spec I argued was the value line on the Fusion-T II a few days ago: roasted maple is more dimensionally stable, which on a $238 guitar means it's less likely to need a truss rod adjustment every time the weather turns.
So: the relic is paint, and I still think it's paint. But the guitar under the paint is a nitro-finished alder body on a roasted maple neck for two hundred and thirty-eight dollars, and that would have been a preposterous sentence to type five years ago.
The Spec Under the Paint That Changes Your Rig
Here's the part that will actually bite you, and it has nothing to do with the finish.
"Vintage-voiced alnico V single-coils" means low output. That's the whole design goal. A vintage-spec Strat or Tele pickup puts out a fraction of what a modern humbucker does, and roughly half of what a hot single-coil does. It's why these pickups sound open and glassy and why they clean up when you roll back the volume knob.
It's also why, when you plug one into a modeler and load a factory preset, everything sounds thin and polite and you assume the guitar is cheap.
The guitar is not the problem. Factory presets are built and voiced on hot pickups, because that's what most people plug in, and because a demo sounds more impressive when the amp block is already saturating. Put a genuinely vintage-output single-coil in front of that same preset and:
- The amp block stops breaking up. Less signal into the front end means less clipping. A model you dialed to sit right at the edge of crunch will go clean.
- Everything gets quieter. Not just less gain — less level. You drop in the mix.
- The top end gets more exposed. With less low-mid output pushing the amp, the bright, glassy part of the pickup is suddenly the loudest thing in the signal, and through an FRFR or straight to PA that reads as ice pick.
So people buy a cheap vintage-spec guitar, plug it into a modeler, decide it "sounds like a $238 guitar," and sell it. It sounds like a low-output guitar. Those are different problems with different fixes.
Four Moves to Make It Not Sound Cheap
I run a Jazzmaster with P-90s into an HX Stomp direct to PA, no amp on stage. Every one of these is something I do on my own rig.

Put gain in front of the amp block, not into the amp block. Add a clean boost or a low-drive block ahead of your amp with +3 to +6 dB and zero tone shaping. You're not adding dirt — you're restoring the input level the preset was designed around. Do this before you touch the amp's drive knob, because the amp's drive changes the character and the boost just changes the amount.

Then re-dial the amp's drive, once, and leave it. With the boost restoring level, your amp model will land where the preset intended. If you skip step 1 and just crank the amp's drive instead, you get a different, fizzier voicing — which is the exact failure mode that makes people think cheap pickups sound bad.

Cut some treble, not add some. Vintage single-coils direct to a PA are bright. Come down a couple of notches on treble and presence, or drop a high-cut around 7 kHz at the end of the chain. Level-match against your other guitars before the gig, not at the gig. If this is your second guitar and your main has humbuckers, the swap mid-set will be a cliff. Level-matching modeler presets is a fifteen-minute job that saves you a set.
The Hum Nobody Mentions
Three single-coils, alnico V, vintage wiring. These pickups hum. That's not a Harley Benton problem — that's a 1962 problem that Harley Benton faithfully reproduced.
Where it gets worse than vintage is if you go direct like I do. A tube amp in a room gives you air, stage volume, and a speaker rolling off the top — all of which mask 60-cycle buzz. Straight into a PA with a modeler, there's nothing between the hum and the front of house. It's naked.
Three things, in order of how much they help:
- Find the actual source first. Nine times out of ten it's a dimmer, a neon sign, or you facing the wrong way relative to a transformer. Turning ninety degrees is free and works more often than any pedal. The 60-cycle hum decision tree will get you to the cause in about four questions, and how to remove 60-cycle hum covers the fixes.
- Shield the cavity. On a budget guitar this is the single highest-value forty-five minutes with a roll of copper tape you will ever spend. I ran the before/after on this in the cavity shielding test — it's a real, measurable improvement, not a forum myth.
- Gate it last, not first. A noise gate is for what's left after you've fixed the cause, not a substitute for fixing it. Noise gate placement in a modeler preset matters more than the threshold setting — gate in the wrong spot and you'll chop the tails off your clean notes.
Should You Buy One
If you want a relic because you like how relics look: buy it, it's $238, and this is the cheapest way anyone has ever offered to find out whether you actually like worn nitro or just like the idea of it. That's a legitimate reason and I'm not going to be snotty about it.
If you want a good cheap vintage-style guitar and the relic is incidental: also buy it, but buy the Light Aged, because the heavy relic'ing is the part you'll get bored of and the nitro and roasted neck are the parts you'll still be glad about in three years.
If you're buying it as a first S-type or T-type to run into a modeler: buy it, and then go read the four steps above before you decide what it sounds like. The number of people who conclude a low-output guitar is a bad guitar because they never adjusted the input side is genuinely depressing, and it's the single most fixable mistake in this whole hobby.
What you shouldn't do is buy the Heavy Aged, plug into a factory preset, hear something thin and buzzy, and decide budget gear is a scam. It's a nitro-finished alder guitar with a roasted maple neck for the price of one boutique overdrive. The pickups are doing exactly what vintage pickups do. Your preset just hasn't caught up yet.
