James 'Munky' Shaffer, co-founder and guitarist of Korn, who built the band's sound around the detuned 7-string. Inspired by Steve Vai's Universe, he and Brian 'Head' Welch ran modified Ibanez 7-strings into Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifiers at A-standard tuning, defining the scooped, percussive low-end chug at the heart of nu-metal.
