The Rule in One Line Constant harshness → static cut. Intermittent harshness (only on hard picking or open chords) → dynamic cut. If the harsh band never drops below the threshold, a dynamic EQ is a static cut with extra steps.
Harsh guitar is almost always one narrow band getting out of hand — usually somewhere between 2.5 and 5 kHz, the range where pick attack and upper-mid presence live. The question is not where to cut. That part is easy and I'll show you. The question is how to cut: a fixed reduction that's always there, or a reduction that only engages when the band actually misbehaves. Get that choice wrong and you either leave the harshness in or dull the entire performance chasing it.
Static EQ: A Fixed Cut, Always On
A static EQ cut is exactly what it sounds like. You set minus 3 dB at 3 kHz with some bandwidth, and that reduction is present on every note, at every dynamic level, for the entire song. Simple, predictable, cheap on CPU, and available in every rig on earth.
Static EQ is the correct answer when the problem is constant:
- A fizz shelf above 6 kHz that's there whether you play soft or hard.
- A resonant peak in a cab or IR that rings on every note.
- A broadly-too-bright amp model you want to shave a few dB off across the board.
For any of these, reach for a parametric cut and stop. There is nothing a dynamic EQ can do here that a static cut doesn't do more efficiently. This matters more than people admit — see below.
Dynamic EQ: A Cut That Only Engages on Spikes
A dynamic EQ places a band exactly like a parametric EQ, but instead of a fixed amount, it watches the level inside that band and applies the cut only when the signal crosses a threshold. Below the threshold, the band is flat and your tone is untouched. Cross it — a hard-picked accent, a big open chord — and the band ducks by a set range, then releases. It is a compressor with a frequency-selective sidechain, aimed at one problem band.
This is the tool for intermittent harshness:
- The tone is fine until you dig in, and then the 3.5 kHz ice-pick jumps out.
- Open chords ring harsh but single-note lines are fine.
- The guitar and a vocal both crowd 3 kHz, and you only want the guitar to move out of the way when the vocal is loud (that's a sidechained dynamic EQ, and it's how mixers keep both present).
A static cut deep enough to tame the loud accents would dull every soft note you play. The dynamic band leaves the soft notes alone and clamps only the transients that were actually the problem.
Finding the Band (Same Method Either Way)
Before you choose a tool, locate the target. The method is identical for static and dynamic:
- Insert a parametric EQ. Set one band to a narrow width — Q around 4.
- Boost that band +6 dB and sweep it slowly from 2 kHz up to 6 kHz while you play the part that offends.
- The frequency where it becomes genuinely unpleasant is your center. For most single-coils and bright humbuckers that lands 2.5-4 kHz; for high-gain fizz it's higher, 6-8 kHz.
- Now flip that boost into a cut of 2-4 dB at the same center. You found the problem by amplifying it; now you remove it.

The Surprised-Discovery Part
I assumed, going in, that dynamic EQ was simply the more sophisticated tool and would always win a head-to-head. So I measured it. I took a high-gain rhythm tone with a constant fizz shelf sitting around 7 kHz and set up both: a static high cut, and a dynamic band chasing the same region.
The dynamic band did essentially nothing useful. The fizz never dropped below the threshold — it was constant, by definition — so the dynamic EQ sat there engaged full-time, which is a static cut with a slower reaction time and more latency. The static high cut removed the same harshness with less phase artifact and no threshold to babysit. Pick attack was cleaner with the dumber tool.
The lesson is precise: dynamic EQ is only worth its complexity when the problem is intermittent. If the harsh band never stops, the dynamic version is a static cut with extra steps. Match the tool to the behavior of the problem, not to which one sounds more advanced on paper.
Where Each One Lives in a Modeler Rig
This is the part the plugin tutorials skip, and it's the part that matters if your guitar rig is a Helix or a Quad Cortex. Neither ships a true dynamic-EQ block. You get static parametric and graphic EQ, and you get compressors — good ones — but not a frequency-selective dynamic band. So the honest division of labor is:
- In the rig (Helix / QC / HX Stomp / POD Go): do the static work. Carve the constant problems with a parametric cut, exactly as in the modeler EQ guide. This is also where the worship-harsh-through-the-PA fix lives — a static high-cut placed right at the cab, before your effects.
- Downstream (DAW or FOH console): do the dynamic work. A dynamic EQ plugin (Pro-Q 3, Waves F6) on the recorded track, or a dynamic band on the front-of-house channel, handles the intermittent spikes and the guitar-versus-vocal collisions. That's where the surgical band-by-band control actually exists.
If you only have the modeler and no downstream stage, you are not stuck — you're just working with the right tool for what you have. A well-placed static cut fixes the large majority of harsh-guitar problems, because most harsh-guitar problems are constant.
