Writing the Second Guitar Part When the Song Doesn't Have One

Two guitarists, a song with one guitar part, and nobody has written the other one. Four things a second part can be, ranked by how often they work, and the test for deciding in a single rehearsal.

There is a moment in most rehearsals with two guitarists where somebody looks up and asks what the other person should be playing. The song came with one guitar part. There is no second one. Nobody wrote it, the recording does not have it, and the two of you have about four minutes to decide before the drummer gets restless.

Most of the time what happens next is that both people play the same thing. It is the path of least resistance and it is almost always the wrong answer, and I want to spend some time on why, because the reasons are practical rather than aesthetic.

Two guitars playing the same figure do not sound like a bigger version of that figure. They sound like one guitar with something slightly wrong with it. The two signals arrive at nearly the same time with nearly the same frequency content, and the small differences between them — pick attack, string age, where the two players sit relative to the beat — turn into a smearing at the front of the note rather than into size. You have spent a whole musician and gotten a chorus effect.

The deeper cost is that no new information showed up. A song has room for a certain number of ideas, and the second guitarist is one of the few chances to add one.

The Four Things a Second Part Can Be

Almost every workable second guitar part is one of four things. They are not equally likely to work, and the order here is roughly the order I would try them in.

Register extension is the one that works most often and gets chosen least often. You play the same chords the other guitarist is playing, but up around the twelfth fret on the top three strings, or down on the bottom four in open position while they are up high. Nothing about the harmony changes. What changes is that the guitar now occupies a different part of the frequency range, and two guitars in different registers read as two instruments in a way that two guitars in the same register never do. It requires no decision about notes, which is why it survives a rehearsal.

Counter-rhythm is the cheapest genuinely creative option. Keep the harmony identical and change only when you play. If the first guitar is hitting downbeats, sit on the offbeats. If the first guitar is strumming eighths, play whole notes and let them ring. This can be decided out loud in about thirty seconds, and a week later both players will still remember it, because "I play the ands" is a thing a person can hold in their head under pressure.

Texture is the part with no rhythmic obligation at all — volume swells, a sustained pad, tremolo on a held chord, ambience that fills the space between the other guitar's notes. It is often the right answer in a song that is already rhythmically full. The failure mode is that it stops having any shape, arrives at the same volume in the verse and the chorus, and quietly becomes noise nobody would miss. Harmony is the one everybody wants to write and the one that fails most. A harmony line is welded to a specific melody — thirds above this exact figure, in this exact key, for these exact bars. Move the melody and the harmony is wrong. Add a section and you have to write it again. It works beautifully on short repeating figures that are locked in place, which is why it is the standard in genres built on fixed riffs, and it works badly on anything loosely arranged, which is most of what bands actually play on a Sunday or a Friday night.

The One-Rehearsal Test

Here is the test I would apply before any of the four.

Can this part be decided, explained, and played correctly inside a single rehearsal, by a person who is not the one who thought of it?

If the answer is no, it is not going to happen. It will be right at rehearsal and approximately right the first week and gone by the third, and what replaces it will be whatever that guitarist plays by instinct — which, in fairness, is usually fine, but then nobody needed the arrangement meeting.

This is not an argument against ambition. It is an argument about where the ambition goes. A part that is simple to state and hard to play well is a great part. A part that is complicated to state and easy to play is a liability. "You take the top strings, I'll take the bottom four" is simple to state. "Thirds above the melody except in bar six where it goes to a fourth" is not, and you will be explaining bar six for a month.

The Half of the Decision That Isn't Notes

This is where most conversations about second guitar parts stop, and it is where the biggest gains actually sit.

Two guitarists have to divide the frequency range and the effects, not only the notes. You can write a perfect counter-rhythm and still have the two parts turn to mud, because both amps are scooped the same way, both players have their mids in the same place, and both boards are running the same reverb at the same length.

Three divisions, in the order I would make them:

Frequency. One player owns the body — the low mids, roughly 200 to 500 Hz, where a chord gets its weight. The other player cuts there and lives above 2 kHz, where the definition lives. Ambience. One player carries the delay, the other carries the reverb. Two delays at two different times against each other is one of the fastest ways to make a song unintelligible, and two long reverbs stacked is the fastest way to lose the low mids entirely. Dynamics. Decide who gets loud in the chorus. If both players lift, nothing lifts, because a chorus only sounds bigger relative to something. Often the better move is that one guitar comes up and the other stays put or drops out entirely for the first two bars.

Get those three right and two guitarists playing fairly similar parts will still sound like two guitarists. Get them wrong and the cleverest arrangement in the world collapses into one thick sound.

What I Expected, and What Actually Happened

For a long time I assumed the second part people notice is the one with the interesting notes. Write a good harmony line, add a counter-melody, give them something to hear.

What I have found, repeatedly, is that nobody notices the notes. They notice the rhythm.

We had a song where I had written a genuinely nice harmony over the main figure — worked out, in thirds, correct. Ran it for a few weeks. Nobody said anything, and the song did not feel any different in the room. Then one week the other guitarist could not make it, and I played the same figure with a simple pushed-eighth pattern behind it instead of the harmony. Two separate people asked afterward what we had changed about that song.

The rhythmic change was smaller in effort by an order of magnitude and larger in effect by about the same. I think the reason is that harmony adds density in a range where there is already something, while a rhythmic change adds an event where there was silence, and a listener's attention is drawn to the arrival of things rather than to the thickness of them.

It made me a lot less interested in writing harmony lines and a lot more interested in asking where the holes are.

Start by Asking What Is Missing

Before you pick from the four, play the song through once with only the first guitar and listen with the specific question: what is not here?

Sometimes the answer is sustain — the song stops dead between chords, and it needs something holding the space open. That is a texture part.

Sometimes it is motion — the harmony is right but the song sits still. That is a counter-rhythm.

Sometimes it is top end — the arrangement is thick in the middle and closed at the top. That is register extension, up high, thin and bright against the other guitar's body.

And sometimes the honest answer is that nothing is missing, and the second guitarist's job in that section is to not play. That is a legitimate part and it is the hardest one to volunteer for, because sitting out feels like being unnecessary. It is not. A verse where only one guitar plays makes the chorus where both play mean something, and there is no effect on either pedalboard that buys that.

If you are on the other side of this problem — one guitarist looking at a song that needs two — the covering both parts alone piece is the counterpart to this one. And if the song genuinely does have two written parts and you are dividing rather than inventing, the register split is the place to start.

The thing I keep coming back to is that the second guitar part is not a compositional problem so much as a listening one. The notes are the last decision, and by the time you get there, the good options have usually narrowed to one or two on their own.
