Roll back to 6 on a cranked Plexi and the distortion goes away. Roll back to 6 on a modeler and the guitar gets quieter. Same gesture, different result. It is the most common complaint from players who moved to a floor unit and kept everything else the same.
The usual explanation is that digital does not respond to your hands. That is not it. The amp models respond to input level fine — feed one a smaller signal and it distorts less, which you can verify in about ten seconds with a volume pedal in front of the amp block. Something else is going on, and it is four things, not one.

Four Things Happen at Once
Turn the volume knob down on a real amp that is working hard, and here is everything that changes in the same motion.
One. Less signal into the preamp. Obvious. Less drive at the front means less preamp saturation, and that is the part everyone assumes is the whole story.
Two. Less signal into the power amp. On a non-master amp — a Plexi, a tweed Deluxe, an AC30 — most of your distortion is coming from the output stage, not the preamp. That is the whole argument in our master volume versus non-master piece. Power tubes clip softly and progressively. They unwind. Cascaded preamp stages clip hard and stay clipped over a wide range of input levels, which is a different animal.
Three. You lose top end. The volume pot forms a filter against your cable capacitance the moment it leaves 10, and that darkening arrives at the same instant as the cleanup. The two are welded together in your ear. We took that apart in the treble bleed post, and the relevant part here is that some of what you call cleaning up is the top edge going away.
Four. The room stops feeding you. This is the one.
The Room Is Part of the Circuit
At gig volume, the speaker is moving enough air to drive your strings. Energy comes out of the cab, hits the guitar, and goes back into the pickup. That is a feedback loop, and at wide-open volume it is adding gain to the whole system — not metaphorically, actually. The amp is amplifying a signal that includes its own output.
Roll the knob back and the loop weakens along with everything else. So the cranked amp is not just getting less input. It is getting less input and losing the free gain the room was handing it. The cleanup looks larger than the electronics alone would produce, because two things are subtracting at once.
This argument comes out of Fractal's own forum, where it has been made repeatedly against the "modelers do not clean up" complaint, and I think it is right. It also explains why the effect is strongest exactly where players describe it: loud, in a room, with a cab on the floor. Nobody has ever complained that their tube amp fails to clean up at 1 on the master.
I had assumed for years this was a modeling shortfall. It is a volume shortfall. Put the same modeler through a real cab at gig level and a good chunk of the missing behavior comes back on its own, because the loop is a physical thing and it does not care whether the amp upstream is glass or silicon. On headphones the loop cannot exist at any setting. That part is not fixable and it is worth saying plainly instead of chasing it through parameters.
Which leaves the three that are fixable.
Why the Preset Was Built Not to Clean Up
Here is the part that does the most damage, and it is a design decision, not a limitation.
Factory presets and most shared presets are built preamp-dominant: Drive up around 6 to 8, Master somewhere down around 3 to 5. That gets you a consistent, tight, repeatable high-gain sound at any output volume, which is exactly what most people want from a modeler, and it is the sound of every modern metal preset you have ever loaded.
It is also the topology that ignores your volume knob.
Preamp distortion in a cascaded gain structure is a wall. Once you are into it, feeding it twenty percent less signal gets you a slightly quieter version of the same wall. The clipping does not unwind gradually, because there is enough gain ahead of it to keep it pinned. Power-amp distortion is the opposite: it is a soft ceiling that the signal approaches and backs away from, and it responds proportionally across a wide range. That is the mechanism your hands are looking for.
So a preset with the Drive at 7 and the Master at 4 has put all of its dirt in the stage that does not listen and none in the stage that does. You did not lose the amp's dynamics. Somebody moved them somewhere you are not touching.
Redistribute, Do Not Reduce
The fix is not less gain overall. It is the same gain, in a different place.
On a Helix, the Master parameter in the amp block models how hard the preamp signal pushes the virtual power tubes — it is a power-amp drive control, not an output level. Turn it up and the modeled output stage starts doing real work. The Quad Cortex has the same parameter under the same name and it behaves the same way, and both of them share the property that everything else in the amp block gets more effective as Master rises.

Work in that order. Drive down first — it will sound thin and wrong for a moment, ignore that. Master up until the amp starts to thicken and compress on its own, which is the output stage coming alive rather than a level increase. Then Sag, which is the power supply droop that rounds the attack and lets held notes bloom; our amp sag piece covers what the parameter is modeling and why 4 to 6 lands near a blackface Fender. Bias X last, which shifts the operating point with playing intensity and is the parameter most directly responsible for soft playing coming out cleaner than hard playing.
Then set level with the channel volume, not by putting Drive back.
Two more things worth checking while you are in there. Set the input impedance to 1M unless there is a fuzz model at the front of the preset — a low input load damps your pickup's resonant peak, so the guitar shows up with less top end to lose, and a roll-back that starts dull ends duller. The input impedance guide has the platform specifics, including the Helix trap where a bypassed fuzz at the front of the chain is still loading you. And if you are running a wireless, your knob behaves differently than it does on a cable regardless of any of this, because the pot has nothing much left to filter against.
Where the Drive Block Helps and Where It Ruins It
A drive block in front of an amp model is not the enemy. A drive block doing the distortion is.
Set as a boost — gain low, level up, tone to taste — it pushes the amp model harder while passing your dynamics through, and the roll-back works exactly as it should because the amp is still the thing clipping. That is what the Tube Screamer in front of a high-gain amp has always been, and it is the reason that arrangement survived forty years.
Set as the main source of dirt, it kills the gesture. Hard diode clipping compresses the signal before the amp block sees it, so by the time you roll the guitar back you are feeding a compressed signal into a stage that was going to clip anyway. Two stages of hard clipping in series is about as responsive as a wall socket.
If the preset only sounds right with the drive block cranked, the amp model underneath it is probably wrong for the sound you want. Pick a higher-gain amp model and use the drive as a boost. That is a better trade than stacking.
What You Should Actually Expect
Do the rebuild and the knob will work. It will not work the way a 100-watt Super Lead in a room works, because a third of that is the room, and you are not going to get the room out of a headphone amp.
What you will get is an amp that goes from crunch to nearly clean between 10 and 5, that responds to pick attack instead of flattening it, and that has some give on the front of a note instead of arriving fully formed. That covers most of what the gesture is for. Malcolm Young got an entire career of rhythm dynamics out of a knob and a right hand, and the part of that you can have is not the part that requires a wall of cabinets.
Rebuild one preset this way before you rebuild all of them. Take the one you use most, spend twenty minutes on it, and play the same part at 10, at 7, and at 5. If the difference between those three is only loudness, the Master is still too low.
