Charvel announced an expansion of the Pro-Mod Plus Dinky DK24 range this week. The coverage is not consistent on the count — US outlets describe four new models at $1,199–$1,399, while European dealer listings show seven SKUs between £999 and £1,155 / €1,149 and €1,329. That's almost certainly a finish- and region-availability difference rather than two different announcements, but I'm reporting both figures rather than picking one and pretending it's settled.
The specifications that are consistent across every listing I checked:
- Basswood Dinky body (one point of genuine disagreement — see below)
- Caramelized maple neck with graphite reinforcement
- Ebony fingerboard, 12"–16" compound radius
- 24 jumbo stainless steel frets
- Three bridge options: Charvel HT6 hardtail, Floyd Rose 1500 Series, Wilkinson WVS130-2P
- HH models: Seymour Duncan Nazgûl bridge / Sentient neck
- HSS models: Seymour Duncan Full Shred TB-10 bridge / Custom Flat Strat SSL-6 single-coils
On the body wood: at least one US outlet reports the hardtail model as ash while the tremolo models are basswood; the European listings I read say basswood across the range. I have not handled one. If the ash/basswood distinction matters to you — and for a hardtail it reasonably might — confirm with the dealer against the specific SKU before you order. I'm not going to resolve a spec conflict from a press cycle.
One more unverified item: at least one outlet describes a 7-string option in this run. None of the SKU listings I reviewed showed one. Treat it as unconfirmed.
The Decision Is Nazgûl vs. Full Shred, and It's Not About Output
Every writeup of this launch is going to sort these by finish. The quilted maple ones look extremely good. That is not a specification.
The one that has a measurable consequence for your rig is the pickup set, and the useful distinction is not "which is hotter." It's where each one puts its energy relative to what a high-gain amp model does to that energy.
Nazgûl (bridge, HH models). Seymour Duncan's positioning for this pickup is aggressive and tight — a pronounced upper-midrange with a controlled low end. That controlled low end is the whole point. A high-gain preamp clips its low frequencies first and hardest, because low frequencies carry the most energy. A pickup that already restrains the lows is doing part of your tightening work before the signal ever reaches the amp block.
Sentient (neck, HH models). Moderate output, articulate, PAF-adjacent. It exists so that the neck position stays defined under gain instead of turning into the woolly mush that a hot neck humbucker produces.
Full Shred TB-10 (bridge, HSS models). Brighter and tighter than Nazgûl, and lower output. Different design intent entirely — it's a pickup built to stay articulate rather than one built to shove.
SSL-6 (middle and neck, HSS models). A high-output flat-pole Strat single coil. Flat poles exist to even out string-to-string balance on a modern compound-radius neck, where staggered poles cut for a 7.25" vintage radius produce an uneven output profile.
Which Amp Block Each Set Wants
This is the layer the announcement doesn't have, and it's the difference between a guitar that works with your existing presets and one that quietly breaks them.
If you buy an HH (Nazgûl / Sentient)
The Nazgûl's upper-mid emphasis stacks with the upper-mid emphasis in most modern high-gain amp models. Two things pushing the same region is how you get the harsh, brittle, "expensive but unpleasant" tone that people misdiagnose as the modeler's fault.
Corrections, in order:
- Pull the amp's Mid control down before you touch anything else. If you had it at 6 with a moderate-output humbucker, start at 4–5. You have not removed midrange from the tone — the pickup put it back.
- A cut, not a boost, in front. If you run a Tube Screamer-type block ahead of the amp, its purpose here is the high-pass filtering, not the gain. Drive near minimum, level high. Why a Tube Screamer belongs in front of a high-gain amp covers the mechanism.
- Check the 3–5 kHz region before you blame the cab. Fizz from a hot bridge humbucker usually lives there, and the fix is a low-pass in the cab block rather than pulling Treble on the amp. Fixing fizzy high gain has the procedure.
- The noise gate threshold will need to move. A higher-output pickup raises both signal and the noise floor your rig sees. A gate that was set correctly for your last guitar will now either cut sustain or fail to close. Noise gate threshold and decay settings has the measurement approach — do not just crank the threshold until the hiss stops.
If you're taking this into drop tunings — and a 24-fret Dinky with a Nazgûl is a fairly clear statement of intent — the EQ targets shift again, because your fundamentals move down a fourth or more while your amp settings don't follow automatically. Drop-tuned high gain, frequency by frequency is the systematic version of that.
If you buy an HSS (Full Shred / SSL-6)
Different problem. The Full Shred is lower output and brighter, which means your existing high-gain presets will feel thin and under-driven, not harsh.
- Add gain rather than EQ first. You've lowered the input voltage into the amp's transfer function; the honest correction is to move back up the curve, not to boost mids to compensate for a loss of saturation.
- The single coils are the reason to buy this version, so build a second snapshot or preset for them. An SSL-6 into a preset built around a Nazgûl is a waste of both. Lower gain, more amp Mid, and a darker cab.
- Position 2 and 4 will hum less than you expect and more than a real humbucker. Flat-pole high-output singles are still single coils. Plan the gate accordingly.
Whichever set you land on, note that the Sentient and the SSL-6 both exist to stay defined — so the neck-position presets you build for this guitar can carry more gain than the equivalent patch for a vintage-output guitar without collapsing.
The Specs That Are Real and the Ones That Are Marketing
Real: stainless steel frets. Stainless is meaningfully harder than nickel-silver. On a guitar aimed at players who bend constantly, this is a longevity feature you'll notice in five years, and it changes the feel of bends slightly — less friction, marginally brighter attack. Whether "brighter" survives an amp block at high gain is another question; I'd call that one inaudible in a mix.
Real: 12"–16" compound radius. Flatter toward the upper frets means you can set lower action before bends fret out. On a 24-fret guitar, that's the whole design argument.
Real: graphite reinforcement in the neck. Stability across temperature and humidity swings. If you gig, this matters more than the finish does.
Marketing: "built for metal." A basswood Dinky with a Nazgûl is built for high gain, yes. So was the previous DK24. The pickup set and the fret material are the actual changes, and they're both good ones — that's a real update, and it doesn't need the framing.
What I'd Actually Buy
If you already own a high-gain-capable guitar and are adding one: the HSS, because it does something your current guitar doesn't, and the Full Shred is a genuinely different bridge voicing rather than a hotter version of what you have.
If this is the one guitar and it's going to play modern high-gain material: the HH hardtail, and confirm the body wood first. A hardtail with 24 stainless frets and a Nazgûl is a very focused tool, and the tuning stability of a hardtail is worth more to most players than a Floyd they'll use twice a set.
Either way, the preset work is the same shape as any pickup change: the guitar moves your operating point on the amp's transfer curve, and you correct at the input stage before you start moving tone controls. That mechanism is the same one I walked through for a different guitar earlier this week, and it doesn't change based on the headstock.
