Cobain preferred cheap offset guitars. The Mustang's shorter 24" scale length contributes to a looser, slinkier feel. Stock single-coil pickups provide a bright, biting tone.

The Nevermind guitar tracks were heavily layered and double-tracked by producer Butch Vig. The raw, lo-fi quality Cobain preferred was polished significantly in production. For a more authentic live Cobain tone, use more gain and less polish.
