The single most important element of this tone is Knopfler's fingerpicking technique. Playing without a pick produces a warmer, softer attack with more harmonic complexity. His right-hand thumb handles the bass strings while his index and middle fingers play melody lines. No amount of gear can replicate this without the technique.
