The Smashing Pumpkins' frontman, chief songwriter, and the architect of the band's enormous multi-tracked guitar sound. On Siamese Dream (1993) Corgan built the canonical alt-rock 'wall of guitars' by stacking dozens of takes of a late-'70s Op-Amp Big Muff into a cranked Marshall JCM800 — and on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) he reached for a Fender Blender to make the choruses detonate. Almost everything was tracked in Eb standard, half a step down.
