The descending lead hook on Reptilia is Nick Valensi's Epiphone Riviera — a semi-hollow with bright P-94 single-coils — pushed by a Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde overdrive into a loud, clean Fender Hot Rod DeVille. It's not high gain: the grind is edge-of-breakup amp headroom plus a light overdrive. Producer Gordon Raphael tracked the band at Transporterraum in NYC with a single Sennheiser MD 421 per amp straight into an API preamp, no EQ — and hard-panned the two interlocking guitars across the stereo field.
