Howe split his ES-175's two pickups between two different Fender amps and recorded them in stereo -- the bridge pickup into a Dual Showman, the neck into a four-speaker Fender combo. He is explicit that the both-pickups position was the sound he was after rather than either one alone, which only makes sense once you know each pickup had its own amplifier waiting for it. That split is the entire recipe, and a single-amp version sounds thin in a way no EQ repairs.
