You can get a clean sound and a crunch sound out of one amp, with no pedals and no footswitch. The volume knob on your guitar does the switching. On some rigs it works the first time you try it and on others it doesn't work at all — and the difference is rarely the amp. It's where the amp was set before you touched the knob.
So here's the setup. Exact numbers where numbers help, and a procedure for the part where your amp and your guitar get a vote.

Set It From the Clean Side
The advice you'll find everywhere is to find the edge of breakup with the guitar on 10, then roll back for clean. I expected that to work. It works badly.
Set the amp at the edge with the guitar on 10 and your crunch is the edge — barely broken, and only when you dig in. Then roll back far enough to be reliably clean and you're down around 5, where the guitar is noticeably quieter and darker. A mild crunch and a limp clean. The fussy side of this setup turns out to be the clean one. There's a narrow band where it's clean and still has some life in it, and if you set the amp from the dirty end, you miss it every time.
Do it the other way around:
- Guitar volume on 7. Bridge or middle pickup.
- Amp volume low. Strum a full open chord, hard.
- Raise the amp a little at a time until those hard strums show some grain — not crunch, just a little fur on the loudest part of the strum. Light playing should still be clean.
- Now turn the guitar to 10.
Whatever you hear at 10 is the crunch this amp has in reserve for this guitar. On a Deluxe Reverb with a Strat, that usually lands somewhere around 6 to 7 on the amp's volume, which puts real crunch at 10. The Gap Check
Play the same chord at 7, then at 10. One of three things happens.
10 is just louder. The amp doesn't have enough in reserve. Try the bridge pickup if you weren't on it. On a master-volume amp, move gain out of the preamp and into the master — gain down a little, master up. If it still won't break up at 10 at a volume you can live with, that amp and that guitar won't do this at that volume. That's not your setup.
7 is still dirty. The amp is set too hot. Back it off half a number and redo step 3.
Clean at 7, crunch at 10. Done. Put a strip of painter's tape next to the amp's volume knob at that number so you're not doing this again next week.
Positions 8 and 9 come free once it works. That's your edge-of-breakup sound, sitting between the other two.

The master-volume row is the one that trips people up. With the gain high and the master low, the distortion comes from the preamp, and preamp distortion ignores your volume knob until you've rolled most of the way back. Your Guitar Decides How Much Range You Get
Same amp, different guitars, different results. Four things on the guitar side move your clean position:
- Pot value. A 500k volume pot darkens faster in the middle of its sweep than a 250k — brighter at 10, darker at 7, which is exactly the wrong way round for this setup. The volume pot piece has the arithmetic, and a treble bleed is the usual fix.
- Cable length. The roll-back darkens against your cable's capacitance, so a 20-foot cable costs you more top end at 7 than a 10-foot one. If the amp is across the room, you're paying for it at 7. (Cable length and tone has the details.)
- Pickup output. Hotter pickups push the amp harder at every knob position. The method still works. The amp just ends up lower.
- Tone knob. If yours lives on 10 anyway, it's still loading the pickup there — a no-load tone pot gives the whole sweep a little more top.
The pickup selector is your third sound. On most guitars the neck pickup at 10 is rounder and a little less driven than the bridge at 10, and sometimes it's a better almost-clean than the bridge at 8.
When the Clean Side Is Too Quiet
It will be quieter. The drop from 10 to 7 is part of how this works. A few ways to make it livable:
- Set the clean at 8 instead of 7 and redo step 3. You trade a slightly lighter crunch at 10 for a louder clean.
- Turn the treble up one number. A darker sound reads as a farther-away one — down the hall instead of in the room — and some of what feels like a level drop is really the top end leaving.
- Use the neck pickup on 10 for the clean-ish parts. Louder than the bridge at 7, rounder, often clean enough.
- Play lighter. The amp is now set so your picking hand is a third control. Use it.
And some of the drop is fine. Most songs want the quieter guitar in the verse anyway.
On an HX Stomp or Helix (and Through Headphones)
The same idea works on a modeler, with Drive standing in for the amp's volume.
- Pick a non-master amp model. On a Helix or HX Stomp, US Deluxe Vib is the Deluxe Reverb; Brit Plexi and Essex A30 work well for this too.
- Master at 9–10. On a model of an amp that never had a master volume, the modeled power stage should be doing real work, and that's where the knob-friendly distortion lives.
- Sag around 5, Bias X around 6. Both add give and touch response, and both do very little with Master low. Bias and Bias X explains what they're modeling.
- Input impedance at 1M. A lower setting damps your pickup, so the rolled-back side starts out duller. The input impedance guide has the details.
- Now run steps 1–4, using Drive instead of amp volume. Set the output level with the channel volume, not with Drive.
One honest limit. Through headphones, the cleanup range is narrower than with a real amp in a room. Part of what a loud amp loses as you roll back is the energy its speaker was feeding into your strings, and headphones never fed you any — why your amp sounds different at bedroom volume goes into it. So a preset set perfectly in the garage will feel a little stuck at 11 PM. Save a second version with Drive half a notch lower for headphones. (Two versions of one preset is a very reasonable number of presets.)
Get the clean side right first. The crunch is whatever's left over at 10, and on most amps that's plenty.
