Vivian Campbell cut Holy Diver at Sound City in 1983 on his matte-black Les Paul Deluxe with a DiMarzio X2N, boosted into a stock JCM800. Where the title track is about singing lead sustain, this opener is about attack: the same chain set drier and tighter so the driving eighth-note riff keeps its edge under Ronnie's first entrance.
