Clapton's 'Brownie' Stratocaster, a sunburst Strat he used extensively during the Derek and the Dominos era. The bridge+middle position provides a biting, aggressive attack with a scooped quality for the Layla riff.

Producer Tom Dowd captured Clapton and Duane Allman playing together in the studio, both through small amps pushed to breakup. The raw urgency of the performance is as important as the gear. Clapton's 'woman tone' technique of rolling back the tone knob is used in some sections for a darker, thicker lead sound.
